RHONDA WALKER FOUNDATION, ALONG WITH SOMERSET COLLECTION,
HOSTS THE INAUGURAL GIVE AND GET FIT EVENT ON
SUNDAY, JULY 24TH, 2011 FROM 9AM TO NOON
Detroit, MI – The Rhonda Walker Foundation (RWF), founded in 2003 by WDIV TV Local 4 News Anchor Rhonda Walker, and the Somerset Collection will host the inaugural Give and Get Fit event to benefit the RWF. This interactive health and fitness fundraiser brings together hundreds of health conscious people for a session of yoga, pilates, a mall walk, runway Function Show and health fair! There will also be dozens of exhibitors from local health care institutions, markets, beverage companies, and restaurants providing free products, information and health screenings to promote a healthy active lifestyle. Give and Get Fit will take place on Sunday, July 24th at Somerset Collection – South Rotunda from 9 a.m. – noon.
“We chose July 24th for this unique fundraising event because it’s the 310th birthday of the City of Detroit, what better way to salute Detroit than by giving back to its youth and we believe the RWF’s proven impact on the lives of Detroit kids is a great charity to benefit,” says Linda McIntosh, Director of Marketing Somerset Collection.
All registered participants can take part in this morning of fitness for a cause. After the interactive session, registered guests are invited to visit the many stores participating in this event and take advantage of special one-day only discounts and promotions. The Detroit Shoppe that gives 100% of its proceeds to charity everyday will donate all proceeds on July 24th to the RWF and provide a complimentary T-shirt to Give and Get Fit participants while supplies last.
“I am proud to share that through the RWF’s five year Girls into Women career and personal development program we currently have a 100% high school graduation rate among all of the Detroit Public Schools teens that have completed all five years of the program and a 100% college enrollment rate,” says RWF Founder Rhonda Walker. “These types of events like Give and Get Fit raise a substantial amount of funds and support for the teens that are part of the program.”
For more information and to reserve a slot to work out or an exhibit table at this special occasion, visit the RWF’s website at rhondawalkerfoundation.org or contact the RWF by phone at 800-652-2989. Pre-registration for the yoga and pilates session is strongly recommended. Individual tax-deductible donations start at only $24.00 to attend Give and Get Fit. Sponsorship opportunities, exhibit space and yoga/pilates slots are still available.
Our current sponsors include: Detroit Receiving Hospital, Oakwood Hospital, St. John’s Hospital, Nth Degree Fitness, Body Pure Studio, Ambassador Magazine, Sam’s Club, Scarlet Communications, What Crepe and many more. For a full list of sponsors, please access the website at rhondawalkerfoundation.org.
The RWF, founded in 2003, is a 100% volunteer organization with no paid employees and minimal overhead. Its mission through the core Girls into Women program is to empower inner city teen girls towards becoming strong, confident, successful and moral future leaders. The career and personal development programs include mentoring, a self-esteem building summer camp, cross country college tours, extensive etiquette, public speaking, goal setting and confidence training, community outreach projects with homeless women and children, health and wellness workshops and workouts and so much more. The dream of RWF founder Rhonda Walker is to literally transform the “girls into women” over a five year period, from the 8th grade until they graduate from high school. The program includes an ardent focus on instilling in every student the expectation that college is a must. It means not only preparing them for college with school visits, assistance with college applications, financial aid and scholarships, but also providing support while they are in college.
