Onsite registration for Give and Get Fit 5K Run, Walk and 10K Race event is still open, $35 for adults and $15 for youth under 18 years old begins at 7 a.m. The event will begin at 8 a.m., along with yoga and pilates instructional sessions and the health fair – featuring an assortment of healthy living exhibitors and vendors providing healthcare instruction, information and screenings.
“Once again we are exited to encourage the community to get out for a morning of exercise with a purpose and for the first time host our annual Give and Get Fit wellness fundraiser in the city of Detroit, the community we serve” said Rhonda Walker, founder and president of the Rhonda Walker Foundation.
“Give and Get Fit has a new route and location along Detroit’s Riverwalk area. Walkers and racers will now enjoy the scenic views along the Detroit River and the urban landscape downtown has the offer. This fun day of fitness benefits Rhonda Walker Foundation’s Girls into Women Program a five-year program for teen girls starting in the 8th grade and continuing until they graduate from high school. Over that five-year period the girls meet monthly for workshops, seminars, retreats, field trips and camps that focus on career and personal development. In addition, every girl is paired with an adult mentor. “We are deeply proud of the outcomes we’ve seen with the teens we serve. These young women become more confident, improve their grades, set higher goals, and become better children overall,” added Walker.
The Rhonda Walker Foundation was founded in 2003 and since then, 100 percent of its teens that have completed the five-year Girls into Women program graduate from high school and enroll in college and 95% percent of these students attend Detroit Public Schools where the graduation rate is far lower.
Celebrating its 11th year of servant leadership, the Rhonda Walker Foundation’s mission and work to empower inner city teen girls towards becoming strong, confident, successful, and moral future leaders continues with a bright future ahead.

Note to Editors, Reporters and Producers:
The Rhonda Walker Foundation was founded in 2003 with a mission to empower inner city teen girls toward becoming strong, confident, successful, and moral future leaders. Its core program, Girls into Women is a five year program for teen girls starting in their 8th grade year and continuing until they graduate from high school. Over the 5 years they are together, the girls meet monthly for workshops, seminars, retreats, field trips and camps that focus on career and personal development. Every girl is also matched with an adult mentor committed to working with them through the duration of the program.
At risk and promising teens with a 2.5 grade point average or better and who are recommended by their teachers and counselors are selected for the program when they are in the 7th grade. These teens begin the five year program the summer following their 7th grade year. The Foundation currently recruits teens from four Detroit middle schools, Plymouth Educational Center, Consortium College Preparatory School, Marcus Garvey Academy and Detroit International Academy.
