“After some 45 years of educational service at the local, state and national levels I know a little about the type of support services that can make a difference in the lives of our school age youngesters. The RWF with its highly qualified and committed board of directors along with a cadre of community volunteers has demonstrated through its emphasis on student mentoring, well thought out student centered activities and school and parental involvement that indeed our sometimes labeled “at risk” students can achieve more than many thought possible.  It is an honor and privilege to serve on the board of directors.”

Biography

Dr. Ronald Gillum is a retired state education and university administrator. He began his professional career as a classroom teacher and administrator with the Detroit Public Schools prior to accepting a position with the Michigan Department of Education until his retirement after 28 years of state service. Subsequent to his retirement he began a second career as an administrator with the Detroit College of Business and Davenport University. He also served as an adjunct professor at Wayne County Community College, Saginaw Valley University and Western Michigan University. Additionally he served for two (2) years as the executive director of the Black Child and Family Institute in Lansing, MI.

Dr. Gillum earned his bachelor of science degree at Western Michigan University and his master’s and doctorate from Wayne State University. His outstanding leadership and commitment to education and literacy earned him recognition from President George Bush and he was appointed to the board of directors of the National Institute of Literacy.  He has also served on numerous other national, state and local boards and commissions.  Dr. Gillum is also the father and role model of the foundations founder Rhonda Walker.
