The RWF teens enjoyed a fun-filled day skiing at Pine Know Ski & Snowboard Resort in Clarkston, Michigan for our annual Winter Wonderland event.   The teens were able to take advantage of lessons and free skiing opportunities.  For many of the RWF Teens, this was their first time being fitted for ski boots, skis, and poles and getting out on on the slopes.  The instructors at Pine Knob showed the girls how to walk, stop and slide while traveling downhill.  After mastering the bunny hills, the RWF Teens were off for bigger challenges.  Led by RWF Volunteer Elna Reid, an experienced skier herself, the Teens jumped on the lifts and headed for the larger hills where they showed their poise and newly-learned techniques.  A few of the Teens took quickly to the experience and ventured off on their own. As with many of our events, once it was time to go, it was hard to convince the Teens to leave.

Sean’A, a high school senior, wrote an essay on the effects of Michigan’s emergency manager law that examined its origins and discussed her reasons for why change is needed in the Detroit Public Schools. While Asia, a junior, looked at the Affordable Care Act and how it can be a positive for the country.

“The Summer Jobs Program has become an integral part of RWF programming,” said Dykema partner and RWF Board Member T.L. Summerville. “The experience the Teens acquire will help them with numerous career choices including what they want to do as adults and what they need to do to get there. We’re grateful to be partnering with Dykema and look forward to expanding opportunities for the RWF Teens in years to come.”

Rhonda Walker Foundation to host Second Annual Give & Get Fit Health and Fitness Event sponsored by Bank of America and The Somerset Collection on Sunday, July 29, 2012 from 8:00am until 11:30am

Detroit, MI – The Rhonda Walker Foundation (RWF), founded in 2003 by WDIV TV Local 4 News Anchor Rhonda Walker, will host its 2^nd Annual Give & Get Fit Health and Fitness Fair on Sunday, July 29, 2012 in Troy, Michigan. This year’s Give & Get Fit, which is sponsored by Bank of America and The Somerset Collection, includes a chip-timed 5K and 10K run/walk endorsed by the Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports, yoga and pilates sessions, a fashion show, and a health fair.

The 5K and 10K races start at 8:00 a.m. in the rear parking lot of the Bank of America headquarters located at 2600 West Big Beaver in Troy, MI. Channel 955’s Mojo will serve as Grand Marshal for the races and get everyone motivated for a great run. The yoga and pilates sessions, fashion show, and health fair will take place next door at The Somerset Collection – North and run from 9 a.m. until 11:30am. Dozens of exhibitors from local health care institutions and health and fitness themed stores and businesses, including restaurants, grocers, and specialty food stores will provide free products, health screenings and the latest information and techniques to promote better health and active lifestyles.

“Give & Get Fit is an event that combines two major themes of the RWF: fitness and giving back,” said RWF Founder and President Rhonda Walker.  “Last year, we came up with the idea to host an event that will inspire the entire metro Detroit community to live healthier and get active. This is a message we teach the RWF Teens, and we want to be a strong voice sharing that message around town.  We had a wonderful event last year and are looking forward to an even better one this year.”

On Saturday, May 19, 2012, the RWF held its 6th Annual Scholar Power Scholarship Breakfast for our 2012 high school graduates, Taryn Dennis and Samone Inman, and their families at the Westin Hotel located at 1500 Town Center Drive, in Southfield, Michigan 48075.

The purpose of this annual free event is to reflect on the many successes the Teens have had over the last 5 years in the RWF’s Girls Into Women program, express our gratitude for the hard work and effort they put into getting ready for tomorrow’s challenges and learning to be strong, confident, and successful women, and wish them well as they leave the RWF while remaining forever in our hearts. We also provide scholarships to help them with their transition to college.

If you attended this year’s Scholar Power breakfast you saw first-hand just how moving an experience it is for the graduating teens, their families, and the rest of the RWF.  But if you missed it, don’t worry, the 7th Annual Scholar Power Scholarship Breakfast will be here before you know it.  In the meantime, if you would like to donate to the RWF’s scholarship fund, click here.  Any amount, $25, $50, $100, or more, is appreciated.
